What is design?
The Kids’ Design Academy – afternoon clubs for 3rd-6th grade students in Helsinki based schools. The Kids’ academy is a pilot project for the city of Helsinki Cultural office offering children the possibility to have design as a hobby. Many different schools have hosted the design club meetings since the autumn of 2010. The instructors are professional designers in the fields of industrial, textile and jewelry design. The Kids’ Design Academy afternoon clubs are produced by the City of Helsinki Cultural Office, the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo and Designmuseum. In addition to the after school activity Kids’ Design Academy summer courses took place in the pavilion during the World Design Capital year 2012. Exhibitions of the children’s work have been held at the Designmuseum and Kanneltalo the Cultural Centre for West Helsinki
The industrial design club meetings encourage children to use creative problem solving and familiarize children with the design process and methods. The meetings seek to inspire and to create both skills and courage to look at the world with new eyes. As the instructor I have developed the curriculum, taught children and planned exhibitions.
