How would I design a hospital?
Lastenvuoro! co-design workshops for children Lastenvuoro! Is a series of co-design workshops where children ideate and design the hospital environment of their dreams together with design professionals. Designer Aino Kiviranta and Designmuseum’s educational curator Hanna Kapanen facilitated the workshops. A pilot workshop was held at the Habitare furniture, interior decoration and design fair 9.-13.9.2014. The workshop was open to all child visitors and was a continuation of the co-design workshop for professionals, Let’s co-create the world’s best children’s hospital 2017, held the previous year.
The pilot workshop tasks were designed to follow the design process starting with empathy, followed with ideation and testing the ideas in a patient room. The aim of the workshop was to collect children’s ideas and find out what elements children find important in the hospital. 181 children participated in the workshop and completed altogether 441 tasks. The themes that arose from the pilot workshop were ideated and developed further in the three workshops that followed. The workshop themes were product design, textile design and interior design. The workshops included empathizing, storytelling, team working, ideating, solving, sketching, creating, testing and prototyping. The series of workshops were carried out with a grant for children’s culture admitted by Arts promotion centre Finland. The project can be followed in instagram: http://instagram.com/lastenvuoro
